Leipzig - 4 Farberstrasse, Ahavath Torah Synagogue
Summary: A few doors away from the Beth Jehuda Synagogue on
Farberstrasse stood the Ahavath Torah Synagogue, where
Leipzig’s ultra-orthodox Jews attended services. Most of the
Ahavath Torah congregation members were Jews of Eastern
European origin. Although many of the congregants wore
Hassidic garb, Ahavath Torah was not classified as a Hassidic
synagogue. Its congregants studied Talmud and Torah,
often well into the night. Every day, young men and boys
studied Talmud under the guidance of Rabbi Feldman, the
synagogue’s rabbi and a well-known teacher and lecturer.
On Pogrom Night, Nazis ransacked the synagogue and
threw its Torah scrolls out of a window. The building was
destroyed in a bombing raid during the war.
