Munich - 24 Ickstattstrasse, Machsike Hadas Synagogue [München / Muenchen]
Summary: In 1923, the Orthodox Machsike Hadas congregation,
led by businessman Elias Wunder, established a place
of worship at 24 Ickstattstrasse. By 1933, in response to
the arrival of large numbers of Jews from other European
countries, the synagogue had moved to 11 Ickstattstrasse.
The congregation’s more established Jews excluded the
Ostjuden—the Eastern European Jews—from having a say
in the congregation’s decision-making process.
According to eyewitness reports, the Ickstattstrasse
building was torched on Pogrom Night (November 1938).
The fire, however, was extinguished to prevent damage to
the neighboring residences.
